GM rolled out its sixth-generation small-block engine family for the 2027 model year, and the changes run deeper than a typical refresh. Three new members join the lineup: a 6.7-liter LS6 exclusive to the Corvette, plus 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8s for the Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500. Underneath, all three share the same 4.40-inch bore center spacing GM has maintained across millions of small blocks since the 1950s. That consistency in core dimensions makes the engineering updates underneath all the more significant.


What’s New Under the Hood
The breathing improvements start at the top. Higher compression ratios, larger throttle bodies, and new intake manifolds with tuned runners push more air into the cylinders than previous small blocks could handle. Dual injection — combining direct and port fuel injection — debuts on this architecture for cleaner combustion across the rev range. The oiling system got a serious overhaul too. A continuously variable oil pump adjusts flow and pressure to driving conditions rather than switching between fixed stages. Larger lifter galleries, bigger main-bearing feeds, and an oil cooler built into the pan keep everything lubricated under heavy loads. Dynamic Fuel Management continues from the previous generation, using eight solenoids in the engine valley to deactivate any combination of cylinders when fuel economy matters more than full power.
The Dipstick Debate
Here’s where things get controversial. GM dropped the traditional engine oil dipstick in favor of an electronic oil level sensor, pointing to the dual injection setup as the reason for packaging constraints. That explanation doesn’t hold up well under scrutiny. The supercharged LT5 small block in the 2019 Corvette ZR1 had both a dipstick and two sets of injectors, proving GM could have kept the manual stick if it wanted to. The real reasons likely mirror what BMW did years ago — manufacturing modularity, stricter crankcase ventilation standards, and steering customers toward dealership service visits.
Corvette Gets the LS6 Treatment
The 6.7-liter (409-cubic-inch) LS6 headlines the sports car side of the launch. It’s exclusive to the 2027 Corvette Stingray, Grand Sport, and Grand Sport X, bringing back a displacement figure with deep heritage. For truck buyers who don’t need eight cylinders, the Enhanced TurboMax 2.7-liter turbo inline-four now makes 350 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque — gains of 40 horsepower and 25 pound-feet over the previous version. GM credits a redesigned turbocharger, upgraded injection, revised thermal management, and stronger pistons for the bump.
Towing and Payload Numbers
The truck applications show real-world results. A properly equipped 2027 Silverado 1500 with the 5.7-liter V8 tows up to 13,700 pounds (6,214 kilograms) and hauls a 2,170-pound (984-kilogram) maximum payload. The 6.6-liter variant delivers 9,700 pounds (4,400 kilograms) of towing capacity with payload dropping to 1,510 pounds (685 kilograms). The 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 follows closely behind, rated at 13,500 pounds (6,124 kilograms) with the 5.7-liter and 9,400 pounds (4,264 kilograms) with the 6.6-liter option.
