A structural staircase made of steel and timber sat on the grass at the Goodwood Estate last weekend, and at its base rested something nobody outside JLR had seen in public before: the Range Rover Sport Electric. The British automaker rolled out an uncamouflaged pre-production prototype for the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, letting it climb those stairs and tackle the motor circuit to settle a question that has followed the brand since electrification began. Can an electric SUV still be a proper Range Rover?
The Platform Decision
JLR’s answer rests on the Modular Longitudinal Architecture, the same MLA-Flex platform that underpins today’s combustion and plug-in hybrid Sport models. That choice preserved the exact proportions, interior space, and 900mm wading depth that buyers expect from the nameplate. The battery pack sits inside the structural floor, leaving ground clearance and approach angles untouched. Martin Limpert, Managing Director at Range Rover, framed the Goodwood preview as a preview rather than the full performance picture, with more details expected alongside the global reveal later this year.
Powertrain and Charging
Motors sit on both axles, and both are identical units, which allows JLR to maintain a 50:50 torque split under normal driving conditions. Combined output lands at 550 horsepower and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of instant electric torque. A large 118.5 kWh battery feeds those motors through an 800-volt electrical architecture, which unlocks 350kW DC fast charging. JLR quotes roughly 20 minutes for a 10 to 80 percent top-up. The estimated driving range sits between 480 and 530 kilometers per charge, a figure limited by the SUV’s heavy curb weight and its brick-shaped aerodynamics.

Design Changes
The exterior updates are deliberately small. A closed-off panel replaces the open grille up front. The rear bumper has been reshaped without exhaust outlets, and a new set of aerodynamic 22-inch alloy wheels does most of the visual work. Inside the cabin, the existing 13.1-inch Pivi Pro infotainment touchscreen gains EV-specific displays for charging status and energy flow. Adaptive damping, all-wheel steering, and a regenerative one-pedal driving system carry over from JLR’s existing performance technology.
Pricing and Launch Timeline
JLR confirmed the full global reveal for autumn, with order books opening before the end of the year. The starting price is set at roughly £100,000, equivalent to about $100,000 USD. First customer deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, putting the Sport Electric on the road ahead of the larger Range Rover Electric flagship that has been previewed at private events but remains undated for public release.
