Chevrolet Silverado EV ZR2: Racing Innovation and Future Trail Boss
While electric pickup trucks are still finding their footing compared to their gasoline counterparts, Chevrolet is determined to electrify the full-size truck segment. Despite the Chevrolet Silverado EV achieving 7,428 sales in 2024, dwarfed by the regular Silverado’s impressive 560,264 units, Chevy is amplifying interest with a new racing variant. The Silverado EV ZR2 is engineered to compete in the Mint 400, a challenging off-road race held in Nevada. Excitingly, this race truck previews a street-legal Trail Boss off-road model slated for release later this year.
Silverado EV ZR2: Born for Off-Road
Developed in a swift five-month period, the Silverado EV ZR2 boasts approximately 98% GM production components. Compared to the standard Silverado EV, the ZR2 showcases reinforced front and rear suspension elements meticulously calibrated for off-road performance. A significant lift enhances its stature, complemented by imposing 37-inch BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires for superior grip and ground clearance.
A standout feature of the Silverado EV ZR2 is its incorporation of exotic Multimatic semi-active spool-valve dampers. These prototype units enable an impressive wheel travel of over 13 inches at both the front and rear. Additionally, the ZR2 race truck is equipped with locking differentials and robust underbody skid plates, ensuring vital components are shielded from the rigors of off-road racing.
Unleashing Electric Power: The Tri-Motor Beast
Intriguingly, Chevrolet confirms that the ZR2 race variant features a potent tri-motor electric powertrain generating a staggering 1100 horsepower. This figure surpasses the road-going Silverado EV RST, which peaks at 754 horsepower with its dual-motor configuration. The race truck’s powertrain likely draws inspiration from the tri-motor setup found in the formidable Hummer EV pickup, sharing architectural similarities with the Silverado EV.
Chevrolet asserts that the ZR2’s powertrain delivers 11,500 pound-feet of torque, mirroring the claimed output of the tri-motor Hummer. While this figure is likely measured at the wheels, a more conventional measurement would still yield an impressive 1000 to 1100 pound-feet of torque.
The Silverado EV ZR2 will join forces with the gas-powered Silverado ZR2 and Colorado ZR2 race trucks, all under the Chad Hall Racing banner. As the sole entrant in the Open Production EV class, the Silverado EV ZR2 will provide invaluable data to Chevy engineers. The insights gained from this racing endeavor will directly influence the development of production vehicles and performance accessories.
2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss: Coming Soon
The unveiling of the Silverado EV ZR2 coincides with Chevrolet’s preparations for the 2026 Silverado EV Trail Boss launch this summer. Initially previewed in 2022, the Trail Boss version experienced delays due to Silverado EV production ramp-up. Now, Chevrolet is poised to introduce this off-road-oriented trim, featuring a factory-installed lift, 18-inch wheels shod with 35-inch all-terrain tires, distinctive red tow hooks, and a specialized Terrain mode.
Showcased in a striking red-orange hue, the Trail Boss exhibits a redesigned front bumper and unique wheels. Chevrolet promises further details regarding the Silverado EV Trail Boss in the near future.
