Renault is set to release a limited edition of the Turbo 3E, with only 1980 units produced. This model pays homage to the iconic 5 Turbo that gained fame in 1980s rally racing.
Reviving the Retro: Renault 5 Turbo 3E
The Renault 5 E-Tech, an electric hatchback designed for the European market, has already captured attention with its retro-inspired design. Its robust shape is a nod to the popular Renault 5 from the ’70s and ’80s. Now, Renault is amplifying the retro vibe with the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a striking and powerful hot hatchback that celebrates the Renault 5 Turbo’s rally heritage from the ’80s.
While Renault has introduced numerous unique concept cars in recent years, this rear-wheel-drive marvel is heading into limited production. The Turbo 3E was initially previewed as a concept car in 2022. Although the production model omits the concept’s oversized rear wing, vibrant color scheme, and teddy bear, the Turbo 3E remains a visually stunning design.
Design and Aesthetics
The Turbo 3E showcases a yellow-and-black livery, echoing the colors of Renault race cars from the 1980s. Renault has significantly updated the bodywork for this special edition, eliminating the rear doors and adding prominent rear fenders that mimic the original 5 Turbo’s air intake. The front fender is equally muscular, and the front end features a more squared-off design with rectangular headlights, an LED fog light-equipped bumper, and three slender vents. At the rear, a substantial diffuser is positioned below a pair of spoilers, one on the roof and another between the taillights.
Performance and Battery
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is equipped with an electric motor at each rear wheel, delivering a combined output of 536 horsepower. This power enables the Turbo 3E to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds. The 70 kWh battery operates on an 800-volt architecture, allowing for a 15 to 80 percent charge in just 15 minutes. This rapid charging capability will be essential for drivers eager to fully utilize the car’s performance.
Limited Production
Renault plans to produce only 1980 numbered units of this hot hatch. While the price remains unconfirmed, it is expected to be considerably higher than the standard 5 E-Tech.
