Chevrolet Faces Software Challenges with Electric Models
In a recent development, Chevrolet has encountered software issues affecting its electric vehicle lineup. Following the temporary market withdrawal of the Blazer EV in December 2023 to address various problems, the brand has now issued a recall for the Equinox EV. This recall, identified as 25V-012 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targets a specific glitch that hampers the adaptive cruise control system’s braking capability.
Scope of the Equinox EV Recall
The recall encompasses exactly 2,890 units of the 2025 Equinox EV, manufactured between July 25 and December 6, 2024. Chevrolet has confirmed that the issue impacts every unit within this recall, specifically all-wheel-drive models lacking the Super Cruise feature. It’s important to note that front-wheel-drive Equinox EVs, all-wheel-drive models with Super Cruise, and all gasoline-powered Equinox variants are excluded from this recall.
Understanding the Software Glitch
Chevrolet has identified the root cause as an incorrect software calibration for the adaptive cruise control within the brake control module. This miscalibration prevents the vehicle from applying brakes when a car merges in front of it during highway driving with adaptive cruise control activated. Instead of utilizing hydraulic brakes, the system attempts to decelerate the vehicle using propulsion torque, akin to the drivetrain’s regenerative braking, which may not provide sufficient braking force, thereby elevating crash risks.
Discovery and Response
The issue was unearthed by an internal engineer, with Chevrolet reporting no accidents or injuries related to this glitch, despite receiving five complaints. The brand has not mandated a stop-sale or do-not-drive order but advises owners to manually brake if the system fails to do so autonomously.
Resolution and Next Steps
Addressing the problem involves a straightforward software update to the brake system control module, necessitating a visit to a dealership for affected owners. Interestingly, some unsold models can receive this update over-the-air, bypassing the need for a service appointment. However, delivered Equinox EVs are not eligible for over-the-air updates. Chevrolet plans to notify affected owners starting March 3, 2025.
