Audi Revamps Its Naming Structure Again
Audi is making headlines once more by revising its vehicle naming strategy. The automaker, which previously shifted away from engine displacement badges to arbitrary numbers, and then to a system where odd numbers denoted combustion cars and even numbers for EVs, is now embracing a more traditional approach. This move aims to simplify the identification of Audi’s diverse model lineup for consumers worldwide.
Understanding Audi’s New Naming System
The latest naming convention by Audi signifies a return to basics, with letters and numbers indicating the body style and the size or model of the car. Sedans will be denoted by the letter ‘A’, while SUVs will carry the ‘Q’ prefix. For instance, an A6 will represent a midsize sedan, whereas an A4 will indicate a smaller sedan. This intuitive system is designed to offer clear insights into the vehicle’s size and positioning at a glance.
Differentiating Powertrains with Badges
To distinguish between electric, gasoline, and diesel models, Audi will utilize specific badges. Electric vehicles will be adorned with the ‘e-tron’ badge, gasoline cars will feature the ‘TFSI’ moniker, and diesel models will retain the classic ‘TDI’ designation. This approach not only clarifies the powertrain type but also maintains a connection to Audi’s heritage.
The First Model Under the New Naming Scheme
The Audi A6 is set to be the inaugural model adopting this refreshed naming strategy. Under the previous system, the electric version was to be named the A6 e-tron, with its gasoline counterpart designated as the A7. However, both will now be unified under the A6 name, differentiated solely by their powertrain badges: A6 TFSI, A6 e-tron, and A6 TDI. This change underscores Audi’s commitment to clarity and simplicity in its model lineup.
Customer and Dealer Feedback Drives Change
Audi’s decision to revert to a more traditional naming system was influenced by extensive discussions and feedback from both customers and international dealers. Marco Schubert, a board member for sales and marketing at Audi, emphasized the importance of providing an intuitive and straightforward naming structure that reflects the vehicle’s size and positioning. This customer-centric approach highlights Audi’s responsiveness to its audience’s needs.
Looking Ahead
While this new naming system will be implemented moving forward, it’s important to note that existing models like the A4 and A5 will not be retroactively renamed. Despite this, Audi’s initiative to streamline its nomenclature is a commendable step towards enhancing brand clarity and customer satisfaction. This strategic pivot is a testament to Audi’s willingness to adapt and evolve in response to market feedback.
