Mercedes-Benz EV Sales Decline in the U.S.
Mercedes-Benz offers five distinct electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States, not counting AMG and Maybach EQS SUV variants. Despite this variety, consumer interest has notably waned, with the EQB, EQE, and EQS models experiencing sales drops of 36%, 39%, and 52% respectively in 2024 compared to 2023.
Discounts on High-End Mercedes EVs
In response to sluggish sales, Mercedes-Benz is implementing substantial discounts on its premium EVs, including up to $15,000 off the EQS AMG. This move comes as part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate interest in its electric lineup. The discounts apply to nearly every trim of the EQS sedan, the EQS 580 SUV, and all AMG and Maybach models.
Specific Discounts on Mercedes EV Models
The luxurious Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV receives a $10,500 discount, reducing its price from $181,050. The EQS 450 4Matic sedan sees a $13,500 reduction from its $108,550 MSRP, with similar savings on the EQS 580 version. The EQS 580 SUV, starting at $128,500, also benefits from a $10,500 discount.
AMG EQE Models Also See Price Cuts
While standard EQE models are excluded from these promotions, the AMG EQE sedan and SUV receive significant reductions. The AMG EQE sedan is discounted by $10,000, and the AMG EQE SUV by $8,000. The EQS AMG sedan enjoys the most substantial discount, with $15,000 off its $148,700 price tag.
Comparison with Audi’s EV Discounts
These discounts, while significant, do not match the record $50,000 off the Audi RS E-Tron GT at the end of 2023. This comparison underscores the challenges Mercedes-Benz faces in the competitive EV market.
Future of Mercedes-Benz EV Portfolio
Given the trend of plug-in hybrid sales surpassing pure EV sales, Mercedes-Benz may consider scaling back its EQ-badged EV portfolio in the U.S. This strategy would reflect the shifting preferences of car buyers and the need to adapt to market demands.
