Ford Recalls 150,000 Broncos Due to Rear Suspension Rust Issue
Ford has issued a recall for nearly 150,000 Bronco SUVs due to a critical issue with the rear suspension system. The problem involves the remote reservoirs, which can detach because of rust. This recall specifically impacts the Badlands trim and models equipped with the Sasquatch Package. However, Ford has yet to determine a permanent fix for the issue.
Details of the Ford Bronco Suspension Recall
Assigned recall number 25V-025 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects 149,994 units of the 2021 through 2024 Ford Bronco. These vehicles were manufactured between September 23, 2020, and July 23, 2024. Ford estimates that approximately 30% of the recalled SUVs exhibit this problem.
What Causes the Rear Suspension Issue?
According to Ford, the long-flange rear shock absorbers in affected vehicles may experience corrosion between the external reservoir, mounting flange, and damper body. This corrosion can lead to the separation of the external reservoir, posing a safety risk.
Signs of a Failing Remote Reservoir
Drivers may notice symptoms such as a bouncy ride, unusual noises, or leaks near the rear wheels. However, in some cases, there may be no warning signs before the reservoir detaches, which is why the NHTSA has stepped in to address the issue.
Warranty Claims and Customer Complaints
As of now, Ford has received 551 warranty claims related to this problem. While no accidents or injuries have been reported, several owners have filed complaints. One owner reported that the external reservoirs fell off at around 36,000 miles, while another described the vehicle bouncing uncontrollably after the reservoir detached.
Impact of Road Salt on the Issue
Some users on forums have noted that road salt exacerbates the rust problem, making it more likely for the reservoirs to fall off. This highlights the importance of addressing the issue promptly.
Ford’s Plan to Notify Owners
Ford will begin notifying owners of the recalled SUVs via mail starting February 3. However, the company has admitted that it does not yet have a solution to the problem. The remedy is still under development, and spare parts are expected to be available by the third quarter of 2025.
Refund Policy for Repaired Vehicles
Owners who have already paid to repair their rusted suspension systems will be eligible for a refund from Ford. This ensures that affected customers are not left out of pocket due to this manufacturing defect.
