Revolutionizing the Classic: The KAMM 912c Targa
Since its inception, the air-cooled Porsche 911 has undergone countless transformations, each more innovative than the last. However, the four-cylinder-powered 912 has often been overlooked. That is, until KAMM, a Hungarian company, decided to reinvent the model in 2023. Their latest masterpiece? A 1968 soft-window Targa roadster reimagined into a lightweight, faster-than-stock, stunningly beautiful, and vividly orange 912c.
The Essence of Purity and Performance
KAMM’s founder, Miklós Kázmér, chose the soft-window Targa as the foundation for the 912c, believing it to be the purest form of the open-top 912. This model eschews the glass rear window option introduced by Porsche in 1967, opting instead for a design that’s as close to the original ethos as possible. But don’t be fooled by its vintage charm; the 912c is a modern marvel, with most of its components no longer bearing a Porsche part number.
Lightweight Design Meets High Performance
Constructed to “Semi-Carbon” specification, the 912c boasts carbon fiber body panels and Targa bar, contributing to its astonishingly low curb weight of under 800 kilograms (approximately 1,764 pounds). Lexan windows further reduce weight, making this Targa version slightly heavier than its coupe counterpart but still remarkably light. The vehicle’s design is both elegant and understated, featuring a matching Tangerine-colored roof rack and surfboard, alongside aluminum replicas of 1960s Porsche steel wheels.
A Cabin That Blends Old with New
Inside, the 912c merges classic aesthetics with modern comforts. Carbon fiber seats are adorned with Tobacco leather and Porsche Pasha cloth, featuring a psychedelic pattern reminiscent of Vans slip-ons. While the driver is greeted with analog gauges reminiscent of the original 912, hidden beneath the surface are modern amenities like a high-end sound system and air conditioning, seamlessly integrated to maintain the car’s vintage appeal.
Power and Precision
At the heart of the 912c lies a rebuilt and modified 2.0-liter air-cooled flat-four engine, delivering 185 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. This is a significant upgrade from the original 1.6-liter four, offering a driving experience that’s as exhilarating as it is refined. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a dog-leg five-speed manual transmission with KAMM-specific linkage and a ZF limited-slip differential, ensuring a ride that’s both engaging and precise.
Customization and Availability
For those captivated by the 912c Targa, it’s available for €395,000 (approximately $407,000). KAMM also offers the opportunity to customize your own restomod, with build slots available for 2025. Options range from paint color to transmission gearing, and even heated seats, allowing for a truly personalized driving experience.
