Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron Recall Alert
Approximately 60,000 Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 e-tron electric SUVs are being recalled due to a potential issue where the vehicle may not accurately display when it is in neutral. This poses a rollaway risk if the electronic parking brake is not engaged.
The recall, submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 26, 2025, affects Volkswagen ID.4 models from 2021–2023 and Audi Q4 e-tron SUVs, including Sportback variants, from 2022–2023.
Rollaway Risk Explained
According to the recall report, the gauge cluster may fail to indicate when the electric SUV’s transmission is in the ‘N’ (Neutral) position in specific circumstances. Without this indication and if the electronic parking brake isn’t activated, the affected ID.4 and Q4 models could unexpectedly roll away, increasing the risk of a collision.
The root cause is a defective brake control unit. Updated software has been implemented since October 2023 to rectify this. However, vehicles manufactured before this date are at risk.
Remedy for Affected Vehicles
Volkswagen is advising owners of affected vehicles to schedule a service appointment with their local dealerships to resolve this issue. The repair will be performed free of charge under warranty. VW notified dealerships by February 25, 2025, and will notify all vehicle owners by April 25, 2025.
